Parkside Multigenerational Homes

Following the success of the Neighborhood Homes Project, Ben began working with the same client on a project which articulated a unique need voiced by the community. This block of five attached townhomes on the Haddon Avenue redevelopment corridor in Camden offer a spatial arrangement wherein multiple generations of one family can potentially live under one roof.

The family living space – a loft-like atrium with a high ceiling – is situated at a comfortable five feet above sidewalk elevation, providing a sense of security for occupants while avoiding creating an alienating presence on the street. Knitted together with other more private and semi-private spaces via an open stair, it is a dramatic plinth that one steps onto before moving to other parts of the home.

As the site is small with a lot of impervious surfacing adjacent to it, extensive planning went into accounting for storm water run-off. The final product will provide multiple green amenities including green roofs at each home, a shared rain garden at the rear of the site, windowsill planter boxes, and in-kind replacement of sidewalk trees. Construction is underway and scheduled for completion in late fall of 2026.
