Parkside Neighborhood Homes

As a Project Architect at Donovan Architects, Ben worked with a local community developer to design ten new, affordable, for-sale homes in the Parkside neighborhood of Camden, NJ. The sites were scattered throughout the neighborhood and featured both single detached and twin attached variations of a new construction home concept.

The design draws from characteristics prevalent in the residential architecture of the neighborhood — such as facade proportions, brick color and length, and corbelling details — but reinterprets them in a clever, modern fashion.

The first floor plan is open, but not excessively so. The brick walls at the facade create impressionistic volumes of space which are cut, sculpted, pushed and pulled to form the transition zones between outside and inside. These zones draw intrigue from the passer-by while allowing the interior to feel layered and protected.

Project managing the delivery of these various prototypes — each on unique sites — was challenging but incredibly rewarding. They were the first affordable new homes to be built in Camden in 10 years, and were featured in the local media. To see the video coverage, including an interview with the developer, CLICK HERE

Construction was completed late summer 2024.
